Course Highlights

• Five “Build It Strong” courses offered by trained WECA staff between now and the end of September 2021 (maximum of 30 participants per course).
• Two trainers per course (one who owned/operated a family child care business and the other with center-based administrative experience).
• Each business course includes either eight 2-hour session or four 4-hour sessions (16 hours of content).
• Program highlights include: basics of child care business, operations overview, outside service needs (e.g., insurance and legal), accounting and record keeping, funding strategies, determination of program type (e.g., LLC, C-Corp, group center, family child care), and professionalism in early child care education.
• All for-profit participants will receive one-on-one general business consulting services from the WI SBDC.
• Sessions are presented online via Zoom, with simultaneous interpretation in services as needed.
• Participants will receive Registry credit for each completed session.

Please note: this series is not a replacement for the State mandated coursework. This course provides additional knowledge and content in business practices to support those considering opening a child care program or those who own/operate programs and are early in their child care career.

Session 1: The Iron Triangle of Child Care Finance

In early education we help children learn about shapes all the time – but did you know there’s one shape you must know as a child care program leader to make your program as financially strong as possible? It’s the triangle – the Iron Triangle. Join us for an interactive session bringing financial information to life. Learn how enrollment, fee collection, and price-setting can make or break your business. There will be time for your questions and to explore what this means for your child care business.

Session 2: Business Operations – Part 1

Operating a child care program means more than ABC’s – come learn about the BCD’s! Budgeting, cost (or how to set prices), and deductions are key elements of a successful business. This session brings budgeting to a level that easy to access and meaningful, exploring typical costs and sources of income. We’ll also explore how to set costs for your services in ways that help ensure you can keep your doors open. We will begin our investigation of tax deductions and how they differ between group and family child care programs. And as a bonus, we will examine the ins and outs of marketing your program. There will be time for your questions and support for you to apply these ideas to your setting.

Session 3: Business Operations – Part 2

Opening or expanding a child care business requires understanding the financial impact of your policies and practices, creating a business plan, and identifying the technology tools that can help get you to your goal of a financially stable program. In this session, we will explore the elements of a business plan (including templates to use). We will investigate the ways your policies or procedures may be costing you money without even knowing it. And we will review the benefits of using technology to remove some of the administrative burdens of running a child care program. There will be time for your questions and support for you to apply these ideas to your setting.

Session 4: Engaging Outside Services

When it comes to running a child care business, it may feel like you have to do it all! In reality, there are times where it makes sense to engage outside professionals to take care of some of the business tasks. Explore what can and can’t be outsourced, as well as hear from industry experts in fields related to supporting child care about how to identify a good fit for outside services. There will be time for your questions and support for you to apply these ideas to your setting.

Session 5: Accounting and Recordkeeping

There’s more to running a child care program than planning great learning opportunities for children. A successful program also includes planning on the financial side. In this session, we investigate some of the early childhood quality standards around financial management and planning. We explore what types of records need to be kept to support financial wellness and operations. We dig into how P&L statements help us as business owners and we define the difference between financial planning and financial management. There will be time for your questions and support for you to apply these ideas to your setting.

Session 6: Identifying and Prioritizing Funding

Tuition fees from families aren’t the only way to fund your child care business. Join us for an interactive session exploring the federal, state, and local opportunities for additional cash flow for your program. We also consider the pros and cons of offering transportation as a part of your program. And we spend time discussing how to handle additional program fees. There will be time for your questions and support for you to apply these ideas to your setting.

Session 7: Setting-specific Considerations for Group and FCC child care programs

Before you can open the doors for your child care business, you must determine your type and legal structure. In this session, we explore several possible legal structures for programs as well as spending some time highlighting some specific differences between group and family child care. We also dig into funding needs for programs and offer some clear steps on creating realistic, achievable financial goals. There will be time for your questions and support for you to apply these ideas to your setting.

Session 8: Professionalism in Early Childhood Education

Professionalism is a key component of any successful child care business. We explore several facets of professionalism from strong contracts, to knowing where you find your early childhood membership organization. Additionally, we introduce specific organizations that support early educators with training, quality standard coaching, accreditation, licensing and pre-licensing and so much more. There will be time for your questions and support for you to apply these ideas to your setting.

Introduction to the Child Care Profession

The Introduction to the Child Care Profession course provides an in-depth look at working in the early education field. Content covered includes and is not limited to: Child care regulation, licensing and certification rule manuals, quality care, the child care environment, nutrition, basic child development, child guidance, and parent engagement.

The Introduction to the Child Care Profession course for the Build it Strong initiative will be a hybrid of self-paced and live virtual sessions.

• • Participants can access the course 6/11/21 – 9/24/21.
  • Live virtual Zoom sessions will occur on the 3^rd Monday of each month from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Each session will consist of an overview of 3 – 4 learning plans with facilitated discussions around the content.  Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions as well as share their work and experiences.  All assignments must be submitted no later than 9/24/21 and can be submitted earlier. In hopes of developing child care programs in rural areas of our service delivery area Child Care Partnership will offer the two entry-level courses that family child care programs need to become regulated. The entry-level courses include the Introduction to the Child Care Profession and Fundamentals of Family Child Care. Offering the Introduction to the Child Care Profession for free will also support group centers because it is one of two courses needed to become a teacher in a child care center.

Introduction to the Child Care Profession is a 45-hour course that provides entry-level knowledge and skills for individuals as they begin to care for children in group or family child care. Learners will explore rules, regulations, and the responsibilities of child care providers. This course fulfills introductory non-credit course requirements as specified by the WI Department of Children and Families.

FUNdamentals of Family Child Care

Fundamentals of Family Child Care is a 6-hour entry-level course to start a family child care business required for all new certified and licensed family child care providers. It provides essential information about establishing a family child care business that meets Wisconsin regulations. This course will meet the requirement for training in business practices for certified and licensed family child care providers and includes a Child Care Business Tool Kit.

Northwest Connection Family Resources provides access to rural northern Wisconsin unregulated providers and those interested in learning more about going into the business of child care, with high-quality training opportunities to support becoming regulated. Strengthening Families through Early Care and Education with Mandated Reporter

June 1 – June 7, 2021  |  Self-paced

In this 3-hour training, participants will learn about the 5 protective factors which are demonstrated to strengthen family function. They will also be able to identify at least three next steps that they could take following the training to build protective factors within their early care and education setting and available resources to implement ideas. Participants will also be able to identify Strengthening Families resources. SCAN-MRT training is included.

Getting to Know Northwest Connection Family Resources – Child Care Regulation and the Benefits of YoungStar Active Participation

This training is an overview of the regulation process, services provided by Northwest Connection Family Resources and the benefits of YoungStar for the entry-level child-care provider. The training will cover the following items: General description of the service delivery area of the agency and services provided, types of child care regulation and the benefits of regulated child care, the process for becoming regulated (certified or licensed), training requirements, how to participated in the quality rating system-YoungStar-and the benefits of the program, and important resources available.

Abusive Head Trauma Prevention Training for Child Care Providers

The Wisconsin Legislature’s 2006 Prevent Violence Against Children Act went into effect in April 2007. The Act required that all child care providers working with children under age 5 years receive training in Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) Prevention and how to manage crying, fussing, or distraught children. Wisconsin’s required Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) Prevention Training for Child Care Providers has been updated and renamed Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) Prevention Training for Child Care Providers.

Shaken Baby Syndrome is one form of Abusive Head Trauma. AHT also includes injury, not only to the brain, but to the skull and spinal cord, which can result from shaking or from inflicting trauma on the head by other means, such as throwing, intentionally dropping, striking, or other forms of impact. Abusive Head Trauma Prevention Training for Child Care Providers addresses the latest information on: ▪ Abusive Head Trauma ▪ The Period of Purple Crying ▪ Strategies and challenges of soothing ▪ Coping with frustration ▪ Having a plan and educating others.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Family Connections, Inc. provides training and technical assistance to current and prospective child care providers to assist them with achieving basic certification classes to be able to work in an Early Childhood classroom independently. Strengthening Families in Early Care and Education with Mandated Reporter

The School-Age Assistant class will prepare participants to be successful in their work with School-Age Children in an out-of-school environment. This will be done by exploring the topics of: School-Age Growth and Development; Behavior Management; Defining a Quality School-Age Environment; Effective
Programming; and the School-Age Professional. DCF Regulations are referred to throughout the class. This class meets the additional 10 hours of training needed to work with children ages 5-12 in child care programs.

Wisconsin Model for Early Learning Standard (WMELS)

The Wisconsin early learning standards model provides a framework of expectations appropriate for young children that can guide our work in the creation, evaluation, and improvement of the conditions necessary for the optimal development of children. Through a combination of practical activities and discussions, participants will learn to use the standards of early learning as a guide to provide quality early care and education.

Pyramid Model e-Modules with Reflective Coaching

Self-Paced Course

State-approved Pyramid Model training content that addresses the theory and evidence-based practices to enhance the social and emotional competence of children ages birth through 6 will be presented online via the Pyramid Model e-Modules. The content aligns with the Pyramid Model framework- a multi-leveled system of support to address child development in critical areas important to school readiness- including social and emotional development. Children who enter school with social and emotional competence demonstrate higher academic achievement. The training provides many examples and concrete strategies for how to use recommended practices
daily with young children and their families. Throughout the training, an assigned coach will provide guidance on the implementation of the skills and strategies being presented and request evidence of implementation plans.

Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED-ARC

The Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age – adults (about 12 years and older) and pediatric (infants and children up to 12 years of age). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years
