Placemaking in Action: Immersive Place Tours

Experience placemaking through immersive tours in three distinct settings.

Explore how the Green Bay Packers organization is partnering with businesses and the community to create a unique placemaking effort that includes housing, entertainment, dining, medical, offices, and public spaces.  The purpose of this tour is for all summit attendees to share a unique placemaking experience together that will kick-off a summit of thought-provoking experiences.

Held concurrently, Summit participants may select between either an urban or rural placemaking tour.

An immersive investigation and dialogue about how local businesses and organizations are transforming the Broadway District in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The purpose of this tour is to provide an example of urban placemaking for participants to examine and initiate dialogue.

  • From Neighbors to Stewards: How Community Infrastructure Builds Place
    Jesse Czech, Westmorland Neighborhood Association Communities often struggle to turn interest into sustained participation and shared ownership. This session highlights how a Madison neighborhood built simple, intentional systems to move residents from passive neighbors to active stewards of place. Through events, distributed leadership and community partnerships, the neighborhood now engages thousands annually and has raised significant support for public space improvements, including a park shelter project. Participants will learn practical strategies to strengthen belonging, activate public spaces and build lasting community infrastructure.
  • Place Management Partnerships for a Clean, Safe, and Vibrant Downtown Green Bay
    Jen Metcalf and Jenny VandenLangenberg, Downtown Green Bay, Inc.
    Vibrant downtowns rely on consistent, coordinated place management. This session explores how Downtown Green Bay, Inc. partners with the City of Green Bay and other stakeholders to keep downtown clean, safe, and welcoming. Participants will learn how shared responsibility, clear communication, and collaboration support everyday downtown operations. The session highlights the organization’s Maintenance Matrix, a practical tool that defines roles, response protocols, and accountability across partners. Attendees will gain ideas and tools they can adapt to strengthen place management in their own communities.

Bus ride to the Broadway District.

Self-guided tour of the Broadway District (lunch on your own and Farmers Market on Broadway).

Guided tours of the Broadway District, the Rail Yard District, and the Shipyard Redevelopment.

Jump back on the bus and get a ride to Lambeau Field in time to join the rest of conference participants for supper.

Baileys Harbor

Develop an understanding of how Extension is helping rural communities through placemaking.  The purpose of this tour is to provide an example of Extension’s rural placemaking work to spark discussion about roles, methods, and impacts.

Depart Lambeau Field in the morning by coach bus.

Visit research stations, waterfronts, ice cream shops, and cheese stores on our tour through picturesque Door County.

Visit local shipyards and other sites on our return to Lambeau Field.

Jump back on the bus and get a ride to Lambeau Field in time to join the rest of conference participants for supper.
