Overview
Entrepreneurship plays a pivotal role in bolstering local and regional economies. Not only does it create employment opportunities, generate income, and contribute to tax revenues, but it also offers a pathway out of poverty. The Entrepreneurial Climate Survey is being completed in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension and the University of Minnesota-Extension.

The Entrepreneurial Climate Survey focuses on how members of Wisconsin and Minnesota communities evaluate entrepreneurship and support for entrepreneurs in their community and state.
Participants
The Entrepreneurial Climate Survey is being sent to 10,000 randomly selected participants located in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Funding
The Entrepreneurial Climate Survey is funded in part by the US Economic Development Administration and gifts from Compeer Financial and AgCountry Farm Credit Services.

The Entrepreneurial Climate Survey focuses on how members of Wisconsin and Minnesota communities evaluate the entrepreneurship and support for entrepreneurs in their community and state. The goal of the survey is to increase our understanding of entrepreneurship in the Wisconsin and Minnesota.

How will this data be used?
Data will be used to also be used to inform educational outreach, research, and policy efforts that targe support for entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystems. Data will also be utilized to produce research reports and journal articles related to entrepreneurship and community economic development.
What is the value of participating in this project for the respondent?
Respondents to the survey will have the opportunity to reflect on support within their community, region, and state for entrepreneurs and the strength of their local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
This information will be useful to residents, leaders, and decision-makers across the state regarding how to better support entrepreneurship. Currently, there is no existing dataset that captures the quality and strength of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota. The results of this study will benefit people living in the region and beyond by providing access to up-to-date information and will help shape policies, regulations, public information efforts, and business decisions related to supporting entrepreneurship.
How were respondents chosen to be part of this project?
Respondents were selected using a stratified, random sample of households within the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota. We utilized rural and urban designated census tracts as the basis for stratification, broke each state into unique regions, and oversampled tracts in rural areas.
What is/are the incentives used in this survey?
All randomly selected participants will receive a $2 bill. This incentive is a token of our appreciation for considering this request. Participants may keep the money regardless of whether they complete the survey or not.
Will my information remain confidential?
Yes. The data collected will be kept separate from all identifying information contained in the sampling frame (mailing list). The names and addresses will not be attached to survey answers. Each survey is labeled with a unique ID number. All responses are kept confidential and secure. All research personnel are trained in protecting confidentiality and data handling techniques.
Is my participation in this survey voluntary?
Yes. Participation in the survey is self-administered in a home environment and is completely voluntary. Participants may refuse to participate, stop participation at any time, or skip questions. By voluntarily completing the survey and returning it in the included business reply envelope, participants are consenting to participate.
How long will the survey take to complete?
The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
